The Big Picture
The Village of Telkwa has undertaken the creation of a long term planning framework that will establish guidelines and principles related to economic, environmental, social and cultural sustainability. This framework is called an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP).
The Village of Telkwa will then restructure the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Zoning Bylaw within the principles of the Telkwa ICSP. These key municipal planning documents will have consistency that will allow Village staff to move forward in a way that accurately reflects the wants and needs of the Telkwa community.
The process will be looking at key Telkwa issues such as:
- Local economic development
- Quality of life
- Environmental protection
- Parks, trials and recreation
- Land use
- Infrastructure (sewer, water)
- Wildlife management
- Climate change
- Arts, Culture and Heritage
Visit the webpage Community Plan / We Are TELKWA on the Village of Telkwa Website for official information about the ICSP/OCP process.
The Village of Telkwa has contracted the Focus Corporation to lead the planning process. The contacts for the Focus Planning Team are listed at the bottom of the Be Involved page in the We Are Telkwa section of Telkwa’s website.
Local input is being sought from several sources including Team Telkwa. Residents of Telkwa interested in being part of Team Telkwa can contact the village office at 250-846-5212 or administrator(at)telkwa.com

Synopsis of the Current Stage
This synopsis was provided by the Focus team on October 7, 2010:
In the beginning of the OCP public process, a resident survey was distributed throughout the community of Telkwa. The purpose of this survey was to collect information from residents highlighting their values, wants, needs, and concerns. The survey results have been used to identify general issues and priorities requiring research and attention relative to the Official Community Plan (OCP); the survey results act as a platform from which more in-depth deliberation at community events was initiated.
In early September, members of the Focus team were in Telkwa participating at the Demolition Derby weekend. A booth was set up equipped with posters displaying the compiled results of the resident survey with suggested policy based on the survey results. The suggested policy was used as a method of validation in which residents were able to indicate whether they agreed with the policy, disagreed or were unsure. This validation technique identified and confirmed possible objectives, solutions and areas of interest for inclusion in the OCP.

The next step will be summarizing and analyzing the information collected throughout the public input process and will compare results with policies and strategies from the existing Village of Telkwa OCP.
The Community Options Report should be ready in October 2010. The report will incorporate the information provided by research, data collection and community input to develop the Community Directions Report. The directions Report is a paper that highlights key sustainable issues identified during the process to date.
Valley Vision would like to provide more updates as they happen. Please help by sharing any news you have on the Telkwa ICSP and OCP process.
