Valley Vision | towards a comprehensive vision for the future of the Bulkley Valley

How did the Valley get to be the way it is?

This is page 2 of 5 in PLANNING OUR FUTURE — a broad view of the Valley and planning.

What was the chain of causes that produced the Bulkley Valley as it is now?

Unless a community understands why it is what it is, its efforts to determine its future will be analogous to feeding something into a black box and hoping for the best. To do a good job of planning the future of the area in which they live, residents must have a good understanding of the chain of causes that produced the present characteristic features of the place.

With suggestions and opinions of readers, this page of Valley Vision will build a story of causal conditions and events for the Bulkley Valley.

An example of a causal story is Dr. Raymond Chipeniuk’s 2006 study about how the central Bulkley Valley became attractive to amenity migrants. In the study, a brief and opinionated story of the Smithers area was distributed to a number of people for their critique. Changes were made, resulting in a more accurate, albeit still incomplete, causal story. The causal story that we create on Valley Vision will cover the full Bulkley Valley and will remain open to ongoing critique and refinement.

Existing sources of history for the valley are listed on the Valley Vision page Bulkley Valley History
