Town of Smithers Official Community Plan Update

The Town of Smithers is holding a public hearing on March 23rd, 2010 at 7:30pm to review the final Official Community Plan.

The Public Hearing is an opportunity for the community to provide comments to Council on the final OCP. Written submissions (mail or electronic) must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23rd.

Background

The Town of Smithers is re-writing the current Official Community Plan (OCP). OCPs are a general statement of community vision, policies and objectives to guide growth and development in Smithers. Basically, they tell us where we are, where we want to be and how we will get there.

The current OCP was adopted in 2000. Every 5-10 years OCPs need to be updated in order to respond to changing circumstances such as population growth, affordable housing, and climate change. While much of the 2000 OCP remains relevant today, there may be some areas that need to be changed, added, or strengthened. This OCP update process is designed to identify these areas.

Active community involvement in identifying and thinking about how best to address current key issues is essential to creating a revised OCP that reflects the community’s concerns, ideas, and values.
