Valley Vision | towards a comprehensive vision for the future of the Bulkley Valley

BV Community Mapping Website

BVCommunityMapping.ca is a website that makes map-based discussions available to residents of British Columbia’s Bulkley Valley. The website is being hosted on the Bulkley Valley Community Server.

The new website (previously named BVMapChat) offers a community mapping service that is currently based on MapChat2. MapChat2 is an open-source web-based tool that allows several users to view a map on the internet and mark up and discuss places on the map. The tool offers unique features that could be of great value to non-profit and commercial groups.

The Bulkley Valley Stewardship Coalition has been using MapChat in a series of small-scale mapping workshops to build an inventory of community assets in the Bulkley Valley. The Coalition worked with researchers to pioneer the use of MapChat as a web-based mapping and planning tool. At the workshops, residents were introduced to the project and to the MapChat tool. During the workshops, and afterwards, workshop participants marked up the digital map and made comments about community assets such as as trails, cultural and historical features, and important ecosystems.

BV Community Mapping is being offered to not-for-profit community groups for free, subject to the availability of technical volunteers and server resources. Government agencies and commercial groups can use their own geomatics staff or obtain contract support from some of the technical experts behind BVCommunityMapping.ca or MapChat.ca.
