Mapping of Cultural and Environmental Values (2008)

Several recent initiatives have pioneered mapping of areas that the community values. See Knowledge and Tool Building for current community mapping initiatives.

Cultural and Recreation Values in the Round Lake Area

Round Lake Community Association piloted an inventory of local cultural and recreational features in the valley between Hungry Hill and Telkwa. Several local trails from have been mapped by GPS and documented in a database. The results are being incorpoated into BV Community Asset Mapping.

Community Values Workshops

Ministry of Environment hosted a series of workshops to develop detailed sensitive-ecosystem and community-values maps; expanding on the Round Lake pilot inventory.

Riparian and Lakeshore Stewardship Mapping Workshop

Ministry of Environment also held a workshop for hydrologists and fisheries biologists to identify sensitive lakeshore, river and stream areas. Valley Vision will share additional information as it becomes available.

Sensitive Ecosystem and Critical Stream Reach Inventories

To support the above workshops, Ministry of Environment produced maps of the area within the Smithers-Telkwa Rural Official Community Plan. Current planning zones were overlaid on known environmentally sensitivie areas. The following overview maps are based on individual mapsheets which are available on request from Valley Vision.

Thanks to Ministry of Environment for producing these maps and for allowing access to them through Valley Vision.

Rural Community Asset Identification

In association with the Promoting Sustainable Communities through Participatory Spatial Decision Support project, the Bulkley Valley Stewardship Coalition hosted 3 workshops in Smithers on October 7, 8 and 11, 2008.

The workshops had two purposes:

  • gather information to become part of a storehouse of local knowledge intended for use in public planning processes
  • test the MapChat participatory spatial decision support tool

Similar kinds of local knowledge have already been collected through the Ministry of Environment workshops of January 2008, and more will be collected through a standing Internet-based facility to be launched following the current workshops.
