Interface Planning Casebook - Case File_11

Features of the Case

This case was discussed at a June 17, 2010 workshop of the conference: Planning for the Crown-Settlement Interface Lands.
The following summary information comes from the Forest Practices Board webpage: BCTS Cutblocks in Slocan Park, January 2010 The full report and news release can be downloaded from that page.

A group of residents of Slocan Park submitted a complaint about a British Columbia Timber Sales (BCTS) timber licence regarding harvest and harvest plans for four cutblocks in Slocan Park. The complainants were concerned that BCTS had not consulted with them effectively and that BCTS would not monitor road building and harvesting. As well, among their many other concerns, the complainants were worried that harvest would impact water supply, terrain stability, visual quality and fire risk.

Success, Problem or Opportunity

In response to the complaint, the local BCTS office initiated enhanced public involvement in response to local needs, beyond legal requirements of the Forest and Range Practices Act.

Potential Solutions and/or First Steps

The workshop participants noted that there is a need for different forest practices planning processes on interface lands.
